Rocotos come from tropical South and Central America, mostly from the high mountains from Chile to Mexico. Plants of Capsicum Pubescens grow up to an altitude of 3000 m. The Latin name Pubescens means hairy. So it refers to the hairy leaves of this pepper. Plants are only known as a domesticated.
Mostly purple flowers are attractive to bees and other insects. The fruits are oval shaped almost like apples, pears, or something in between. The colour of the fruit is usually red with different shades, but can also be chocolate brown, orange, purple, or yellow. Pubescens taste sweet and fruity with emerging very hot heat. Scoville scale of the Aji Angelo is between 50,000-250,000 SHU. The seeds are black or blackish at maturity.
They grow into 4 m woody plants relatively quickly. The more peppers are old, the more they resemble a structure of the tree. Plants live up to 15 years.
